English and Phonics
Phonics & Reading
At Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy synthetic phonics is taught through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. The forty four common sounds in the English language are taught and children learn how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding). Most importantly Read Write Inc. Phonics provides the children with the opportunity to read a range of exciting fiction and non-fiction books with words they can decode, so they enjoy early success in reading.
We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.
We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.
Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the programme with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make reading and writing pleasurable and rewarding for our children.

We teach writing based on the 'Talk for Writing' approach developed by Pie Corbett. This engaging approach focuses on oral storytelling as a basis for writing, creatively exploring and innovating fiction and non-fiction text structures and developing an ambitious use of vocabulary.
