Teaching Approaches

PHONICS AND READING

At Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy synthetic phonics is taught through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. The forty four common sounds in the English language are taught and children learn how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding). Most importantly Read Write Inc. Phonics provides the children with the opportunity to read a range of exciting fiction and non-fiction books with words they can decode, so they enjoy early success in reading.

MATHEMATICS

ARK academies have a special focus on mathematics and we invest to attract and train the best teachers. At Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy we teach a distinctive, world-leading maths curriculum (Maths Mastery). Our aim is to ensure that every child achieves mastery of mathematics concepts, computational skills, problem solving and application of mathematics to daily life activities. Children learn drawing strategies to solve complex problems and build strong links between objects, pictures, and abstract numbers. We teach mathematics topics in depth, so children understand the “how” as well as the “why”.

More details about mathematics mastery, in addition to information relating to the philosophy and evidence behind this approach can be found by clicking the image below.
